Tomorrow night New York’s Mecka Gallery opens it’s doors for their third solo show featuring an installation by the elusive Brooklyn street artist Judith Supine entitled “Golden Child”. SAN stopped by to bring you this preview so hit the jump to discover the full story on Judith Supine’s newest exhibition.

Judith Supine (a moniker derived from his mother’s name) grew up in Portsmouth, Virginia.  Supine spent his early childhood all the way up until just after his 17th birthday not speaking.  Supine’s Mother as a result of this fact taught him to draw and paint as an emotional outlet and a device for communication.

This deep emotion transplanted from his mothers art lessons has crafted Supine’s signature cut and paste style featuring his trademark green faces and cigarettes.  Supine’s work has been correctly described as “controlled chaos” mixing different mediums into larger than life images that can overwhelm the senses.

Supine is most proud to be known for his “exceptional placement” of his work.  For example, in 2007 Supine climbed the Manhattan Bridge (31 stories) freehand to hang one of his large collages (FYI … he did not get arrested).

Tomorrow nights show is a departure from Mecka Galleries Alumni (Rene Gagnon & Priest) who made it their mission to cover every inch of the walls with an array of different mediums of work.  Supine on the other hand has treated the space as less of a canvas and more of a giant installation.

Mecka invited me once again to stop by and preview the show. Unlike my past visits this time I found myself along with five other people carefully maneuvering one of two giant sculpture (it had to be at least 15 feet tall… see the photos) to it’s upright position to be chained to the ceiling.  These sculptures will be the centerpiece of the exhibition highlighted with custom lighting.  Supine unlike his predecessors has left the walls mostly whitewashed.  This is to extenuate the beauty of these large and intricate pieces.

The instillation is truly awe inspiring and must be seen in person.  These teaser photos truly do not do it justice!

Additionally, 100 prints entitled “Treasure Island” will be available on a first come first served basis at $150.00 each (a serious bargain for a Supine print) so get there early.  I have also heard rumors that there are a couple Supine originals randomly hidden in the blind tubes!!

See you all tomorrow at:
