After 3 years hiatus from the art world, Irish artist Fintan Switzer suddenly came back with new work, just as he 1st appeared out of nowhere back in 2012. Announcing his comeback through a newsletter sent to fans, he just launched From The Undergound website, showing his latest canvases, works on paper as well as couple of “street pieces”.
The public works are titled “A day late and a dollar short” and are consisting of 6 brand new interventions created @ unknown, carefully picked locations. While most of the works are done using his masterful painterly style, 2 pieces are sort of mixture between installation and photography, as a new concept to the artist.
Captured on black and white photographs, the “Hedge your bets” and “There’s a stairs in every whorehouse” pieces feature real life characters that are completing the pieces. One being ironic view on suicide attempt and one warning about danger awaiting even at most hedonistic place.
The striking painted pieces are cleverly playing with light and shadow effect through use of classic figurative or portraiture form, and are further accented by additional light placed next to the work. These wall paintings are not large in scale, but very effective due to his impeccable skills and powerful, well executed concept. The artistry of these pieces is accented by leaving the work unfinished, incomplete, and their meaning is explained through poetic titles such as “All the things you could be by now if Sigmund Freud’s wife was your grandmother”, “He dug graves (I’m not that into them)”, etc.
Check out all the works after the jump and please feel free to let us know what you think of Fintan’s work in our comment section.
