FAILE “Temple” New Book Review

There is nothing we like more than seeing the construction of a great piece of artwork, we like to see the artists using their materials, the surroundings, the coffee cups on desks and calendars on walls.
However its not often that many of us actually get to see this as artists are usually quite an illusive bunch! Luckily, on occasions, artists allow the documentation of their work.
This book follows the construction and placement of a large scale site specific installation piece in Portugal by the FAILE duo. When we say ‘large’ scale, we mean a life size temple size work. The book consists mainly of photographs with a little accompanying text informing us of the nitty gritty concepts behind the realization of this epic piece of work. In fact its almost fair to say that it is not one piece of work but a collection of many works that go into the temple as a whole, from sculpture to mosaic tiling all with a faile twist.

For those who know the familiar sight of Francis Bacon’s studio shots will know what we mean about gaining an insight to an artist through seeing his workspace and work at the developmental stages.  This 128 pages book (finished to the high standards we have come to expect from Gestalten) provides us with a pleasurable photo voyage through the various features of the interior and exterior of the temple and concludes with its development and construction.
