Following its acclaimed presentation at CAN Art Fair 2024 in Ibiza, the monumental bronze sculpture Nalakala by Indonesian artist Roby Dwi Antono has been installed at the iconic Puente Romano Hotel in Marbella, Spain, where it will remain on public view for at least one year.
A New Chapter in Public Art
Installed within the Mediterranean gardens of Puente Romano, Nalakala blurs the line between public art and contemporary mythology. Though born from the studio, its monumental presence in an open, accessible setting transforms the piece into a living dialogue between fine art, nature, and the public.
The work expands the vocabulary of what public sculpture can represent in the 21st century, a poetic gesture of imagination placed outside institutional walls, inviting viewers to encounter beauty and reflection in their everyday surroundings.
“Our goal is to create enduring, accessible encounters with contemporary art,” explains Rom Levy, founder of Volery Gallery and StreetArtNews. “Public art has evolved beyond murals and interventions. It’s about how artists engage with architecture, landscape, and emotion. Nalakala embodies that evolution.”
Bridging Contemporary Art and the Street
For Antono, whose practice often explores the fragile tension between innocence and chaos, Nalakala marks a bold transition from two-dimensional narratives to immersive, site-specific storytelling.
From the streets of Yogyakarta to international museum collections, Antono’s journey mirrors the global rise of artists who emerged from illustration, pop surrealism, and street-inspired visual languages, now defining a New Contemporary movement that bridges urban art and high culture.
