Earlier this week Irish street artist Solus sat down with me to discuss street art, galleries, Ireland, and more…

Solus is a very polite soft spoken guy with a Rollie Fingers mustache.  Always traveling to the next empty wall ready to paint something even bigger and bolder than his last piece.  Although Solus can seem reserved at times he is very passionate about his art, and even more heartfelt towards his fans.
Where is the name Solus come from?
Solus is Irish for light . There is also a lightbulb manufacturer in Ireland called Solus.

I liked the name and the meaning and there was nobody else using the name to my knowledge.
How long have you been using the Moniker?
About 7 years now – time flies …
You’re from Ireland?  Which part?  How is the street art scene there?
Yes I am from Dublin city – I Live in the city center a couple of minutes walk from my studio. There is a good street art scene there for a small city of about 1 million. Guys like Maser, Dmc and ADW to name but a few.
How long have you been painting for?
I have been doing illegal street art for over 7 years – when I started I just did illegal walls / stencils – after a few years I started getting bigger legal walls.
Do you prefer gallery shows or painting walls?
I love painting walls and working in the studio – I always feel out of place in gallery shows – everybody is dressed up real nice, and I’m usually covered in paint.
How did you end up painting a wall for Bushwick Collective?

I met Joe a couple of years ago – he liked my work and I have been painting there ever since.

Any collaborations in the near future?

I don’t usually do collaborations – Nothing planned, but I am open to the idea.
Who are your Art influences?
Usually artists who work really hard and are passionate about what they do, they influence me the most.
Whose work is influencing you these days?

There are way too many to mention.

Any upcoming NYC works?  Any outside NYC?

Yes – I have a solo exhibition in Montreal opening the 19thof July (next week) – then I will paint  murals in Toronto – Miami – Manhattan I am excited.
A very limited amount of prints are available of his now infamous street piece “Love Me Tender”.  Contact [email protected] to grab one of the remaining few!  I have one up in my office : )
