Boa Mistura recently travelled to Lodz in Poland for the Lodz Mural Project curated by our friend Michał Bieżyński. The piece entitled “Life Is A State Of Mind” was painted using 105 colors on the 600 m2 wall.
“In their art, Boa Mistura usually is using very bright, vibrant and warm colors. Their work is very diversed, but on the walls, mostly they are combining graphical forms with very legible typography. In the majority of the cases, they are trying to work with the local context, using different symbols, motives and the stories related with the identity of the chosen area. The mural in Lodz exposes the phrase “Życie jest stamen umysłu” (“Life is a state of mind”), the quote taken from the book “Being there” written by Jerzy Kosiński in 1971, famous writer from Lodz. The sentence was located in the main, center part of the whole composition, between multicolored graphical forms. Taking into account the exposition of the wall and the trees that are reducing a bit the visibility from the street, since the beginning I was thinking that the mural suppose to pop out through the trees with the color. The art of Boa Mistura seems to be perfect for this spot”.
Boa Mistura, about their concept: “Life, is subjective. From the roots of the past, and the seeds of the present, there’s a future that borns, grows and blooms between what we were, what we are and what we will become. That’s why we imagine two faces, opposed but complementaries, under the same sky. Between them, a world over-loaded with life flourishes. It expands, invades us, inspires us and brings us to a world in which our thoughts know no limits. To represent this vegetative world we used, as reference, national floral spicies. This way, we are making a tribute to the words of the poet throught the most basic part that is the town that saw him born”.
