Ian Strange SUBURBAN

Standard Practice Gallery is proud to present the American premiere of Australian-artist Ian Strange’s acclaimed exhibition SUBURBAN in a pop-up exhibition located at 136 Bowery from May 20th – 30th, 2016.

Cinematic in both tone and scale, SUBURBAN investigates the iconography surrounding the family home and its place in the current economic climate. The exhibition presents eight large-scale photographic works and a multi-channel, surround sound video installation. This work documents site-speci c interventions directly incorporating suburban homes undertaken by Strange in Ohio, Detroit, Alabama, New Jersey, New York and New Hampshire. These involved painting onto suburban homes and in some cases, burning them to the ground. Strange then worked with his production team to meticulously document these interventions in lm and photography.

Strange created SUBURBAN over two years working with a lm crew and volunteers across the United States. This exhibition marks the debut of this body of work to American audiences where the project was originally conceived.

The exhibition will run from May 21st – 30th, 2016 with the opening event held Friday May 20th from 6pm – 9pm.
