Our friend Ana Maria recently spent some time in Kiev, Ukraine, working on her large piece for the ArtUnitedUs project curated by Geo Leros, Iryna Kanishcheva and Waone Interesni Kazki. On a beautiful brickwall building she created “El Abrazo del Sosiego” (Embrace of Peace), in hope that it brings color and calm to the city and the many people that walk the busy street its painted on.

For this project the artist studied about Ukraine’s complex political situation and decided to create a piece inspired by the mythological Rise of the Phoenix embracing a human soul. Without using language or text, she created an image that sends message of solidarity and love. The contrast of brick wall pattern as a background and the light color image created a striking, almost ghostly effect to the finished piece. If you’re visiting Kiev you can see it in person in Turhenievska street.

“This human figure is looking forward, making emphasis in the future, preparing all 5 senses for the days to come with strength and determination. Walking through the streets of Kiev, I was able to witness beauty in so many ways. The architecture, the beautiful people, their kindness…” – Ana Maria

Check out more photos by Anton Kuleba after the jump and come back soon for more reports from Kiev and their ArtUnitedUs project.
